Carpets are not something you buy every other week, so you can't expect to be an expert.
There are now scores of different TYPES of carpets and thousands of ranges. Axminsters, wiltons, patterned prints, twist piles, cords, shadows, Saxonies, berbers, loop piles, cut piles..... the list is bewildering.You need to address a few basic questions before choosing.
Measuring
Firstly, how many sq. metres or yards do you need? Measure up, in either metric or imperial we don't mind, and multiply the length and width to get the area. Bear in mind that the bulk of carpets are now available 4 metres, (13'0) wide. If you measure in feet and inches divide the sum by 9 to get sq. yds.. i.e. a room 14'3 x 11'6 would work... 14.25 x 13 = 185.25 divided by 9 = 20.58 sq. yds..
Price Range
Decide how much you want to spend over all, (be reasonable), and divide that by your sq. metreage to get a rough idea of your price range. Or just decide how much you want to spend and trust us. I wish I had a quid for every time someone came in and said they had beed quoted £300 for thier room and were astounded that we could do EXACTLY the same for £200. I'd have thousands! Hey. Wait a...
Type of carpet
Decide if you want plain or patterned. A pattern will tend to make a small room look smaller, as will dark colours. Check whether you already have underlay and gripper down in the room. What sort of backing are you looking for? A hessian, jute or other hardback carpet requires an underlay to give it a luxurious feel. There are several different types of underlay. A felt back carpet will not need underlay but will be harder underfoot. A felt back carpet, or often a gel back, can be fitted with OR without underlay! Check the floor, make repairs if necassary, before arranging a fitting date.
